Makena Beach (Big Beach)

One of the most breathtaking beaches in all of Hawaii, Makena Beach—often called Big Beach—is a massive, golden-sand shoreline stretching nearly 2/3 of a mile. It’s surrounded by lush green cliffs and offers stunning views of Molokini Crater and Kaho‘olawe Island. The waves here can be powerful, making it a hotspot for bodyboarding and skimboarding, but swimmers should be cautious of the strong shore break.

Little Beach

Just a short climb over the lava ridge at the north end of Big Beach, Little Beach is a small, secluded cove with soft sand and turquoise waters. It’s famous for being Maui’s unofficial clothing-optional beach, attracting a mix of locals and visitors looking for a more relaxed, free-spirited experience. On Sunday evenings, it transforms into a lively scene with drum circles, fire dancers, and a unique bohemian energy.

Maluaka Beach

Often referred to as "Turtle Town," Maluaka Beach is one of the best places on Maui to spot Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) while snorkeling. The reef just offshore is teeming with marine life, and the calm waters make it an excellent place for beginners to explore. This beach is also relatively less crowded compared to others in Makena, making it a peaceful escape.

Keawakapu Beach

Keawakapu Beach is a long and stunning stretch of sand that feels more off-the-beaten-path compared to some of the resort-lined beaches in Wailea. It’s perfect for long walks, sunrise paddleboarding, or simply lounging on the soft, golden sand. The waves here are usually gentle, making it a safe place for swimming, and the reef at the north end offers some decent snorkeling.

Wailea Beach

Wailea Beach is one of Maui’s most luxurious beaches, located between some of the island’s most prestigious resorts, including the Four Seasons and Grand Wailea. Despite its high-end surroundings, the beach itself is public and well-maintained, with soft golden sand and calm waters. It’s an excellent spot for families, as the gentle waves make swimming and snorkeling enjoyable for all ages.

Polo Beach

Tucked away at the southern end of Wailea, Polo Beach is a quieter alternative to Wailea Beach, with a mix of soft sand and rocky outcroppings that provide excellent snorkeling. The beach has a peaceful feel, and while it's adjacent to the Fairmont Kea Lani Resort, it tends to be less crowded than other Wailea beaches.

Kamaole Beach Parks (Kam I, II, III)

This trio of beaches in Kihei—Kamaole I, II, and III—are among the most popular and accessible on Maui’s south shore. All three have lifeguards, showers, and picnic tables, making them perfect for a full day at the beach. The sunsets here are legendary, drawing crowds each evening to watch the sky light up in vibrant colors.

Mokapu Beach

Right next to Ulua Beach, Mokapu Beach offers a similar experience but is often less crowded. It has soft sand and gentle waves, making it ideal for swimming, and the rocky ends provide good snorkeling opportunities. The beach is backed by luxurious condos, but it still retains a natural beauty that makes it a wonderful place to relax. The beach path running behind Mokapu and Ulua connects to other parts of Wailea, making it easy to explore the coastline.
